If I, or just about anyone working in sketch today, were to pick one British comedy team who had the most influence on American sketch comedy, it would have to be John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Graham Chapman, and Terry Jones. They are Monty Python. They are the reigning gold medalists in pretty much every comedic sport. They are the crème de la crème. Their absurdity is unmatched. They threw away rules and turned every convention on its head.

But before we get too far along on a Python path, I would like to share some work from one of their influences. You may remember when we mentioned something called British music hall. In British music hall the sketches usually follow, what we consider, a very traditional format. There was usually a premise, with some kind of an escalation, and then a button.
